Which TV Technology is Apt for Gamers?

Plasma Gaming TV Sets

As far as gaming is concerned, Plasma gaming TV set will naturally outperform an LCD set. The best benefit that you get with a plasma TV is that they have deeper levels of black color which is required for an improved contrast. Furthermore, there is no motion blurring problems and limited viewing angle like that of LCD sets.

However, there is also a potential downside regarding plasma televisions. Many plasma TV sets suffer from the problem of picture retention. When a static picture remains on the screen for a longer period, say a few hours, a faint and obstinate imprint is left behind for some time. For most of the TV programs, this isn’t a problem because you don’t have much of the static images. But gaming do use static images in many forms such as the-background, over-head displays, health bars etc. Thus, image retention can matter in such cases. Newer plasma TVs deal with this issue in a better way and very soon you might come across plasma TVs without any trouble of image retention.

The newest in TV technology, the OLED TVs integrate the plus points of both LCD and Plasma TVs. OLED TV sets are capable of showcasing bright pictures like that of LCDs and also successfully maintain deeper black levels like that of plasma sets. However, it’s the latest in TV technology and being extremely new in the market it requires a costly investment on part of the customer planning to own it.

LCD Gaming TV with LED Backlighting-The Best Option for Gamers

The viewing angle is not of much importance as far as gaming is concerned as most of the gamers will be glued to the centre of the screen. This issue will come into play only when you are playing with a group of friends surrounding the TV screen. Thus, a viable choice for the modern day gamers is an LCD gaming TV with LED backlighting.

What to Look for in an LCD TV for Gaming?

If you look for certain features while purchasing a new television set, it will certainly augment your gaming delight. Here’s what you should look for:

· Refresh Rate – This feature is addressed by different names by different brands. Basically, it reduces the motion blurring effect. But as it adds to image processing, it can also add to the motion lag. Thus, a refresh rate of 120 Hz is optimum for gaming as well as TV viewing.

· Local Dimming – This feature dims the LED backlighting at darker portions of the screen while also upholding the brighter parts well.

· Gaming Mode – TVs with game mode option will greatly boost your gaming experience because this mode is formatted to reduce the input lag (the time gap between your pressing the button and its corresponding action appearing on the screen). However, there is a catch. On some of the gaming TV sets the input lag is reduced at the cost of image processing and you may experience slightly substandard picture quality after putting it on the game mode.

You can also reduce the input lag without switching to the game mode by turning off some of the features that affect the picture quality without much reason viz. edge enhancement and digital noise reduction. Now, based on your experiences, it’s up to you to decide whether you want to switch to the game mode or not. However, it is better to have this option than not having it at all.

What about Smart TVs?

If you are using a gaming console, a smart TV with internet connection is not required. However, if you are a casual gamer buying a smart TV will give you access to various online games and other interesting apps.
